subculture 101: lolcats

Lolcats is the subculture phenomenon of user generated photographs that combine a picture of a cat with a humorous and idiosyncratic caption in broken English (not to be confused with Engrish). The language is often referred to as a dialect called “lolspeak” or “Kitteh!” The actual name is the merging of LOL (Laughing Out Loud) and Cat (your feline friend).
Typing in “Lolcat” ino Google will bring up just over a million results that refer and talk about these altered photographs. The point? It’s just funny and cute. There’s an aspect of storytelling in Lolcats, where every photo attempts to interpret a situation a cat finds themselves in using a language that resembles baby talk. The surging popularity has driven people to collect and share their creations of these photos on websites and forums that are dedicated to preserving the Lolcat phenomenon.
