BSC is a design firm that recently won an award from the Small Project Awards by the American Insititute of Architects. Their winning design features low cost housing to be used for the housing shortage in South Africa. The homes are ingeniously designed: the homes are packed flat (think furniture from Ikea) and can be assembled by four people with only a screw driver and an awl (both tools come with the home package). Much like a grow home, tenants can purchase additional compartments, bathroom, windows, closets, and kitchen that simply expand the original 10×12 foot structure. Not too shabby for a home that costs about $1500 a piece.
